Centre for Youth & Criminal JusticeCentre for Youth & Criminal JusticeUnderstanding and Responding to Distress Behaviours in Young PeopleDescriptionJoin Visiting Professor Dr Lorraine Johnstone for this 2 day training course for practitioners working with distressed young people who have care experience/developmental trauma.
Young people can show distress (and risky) behaviours for a range of reasons. If we are to meaningfully help, we need multi-level, multi-theoretical understanding and interventions. The ABC and 6D frameworks are an attempt to use simple heuristics to capture and communicate the very complex needs of children who present with challenging behaviours. The approach is designed to help young people understand themselves, to help practitioners understand the young people, and to promote collaborative care planning. We would like to invite you to a two day introductory workshop where these approaches will be presented, discussed and practiced using case examples and other teaching approaches.
Find out more about the ABC and 6D frameworks and how it relates to START-AV and GIRFEC.

Children and Young People in Conflict with the Law: Communication Needs and Upholding RightsDescriptionThis 2 day in person training course is for those practitioners who wish to raise their awareness and understanding of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) of children and young people in conflict with the law, with a focus on upholding their rights.
Day 1 will focus on the practicalities of SLCNs – awareness and prevention, the impact of trauma and adversity, how can systems and processes be safe, supportive and accessible?
Day 2 will focus on how practitioners can uphold the rights of those children in conflict with the law, including how children would like practitioners to work with them in meeting their communication needs.
This exciting course will enable participants to exchange knowledge and experience while reflecting and sharing practice to raise awareness of SLCNs through the use of case studies, research and tools specifically designed for working with children with communications needs.
