This one-day course provides an overview of the data analysis process, the core principles of machine learning, and introduces a range of machine learning techniques that can be used to model data and formulate predictions, all using the R programming language. It is an introductory course aimed at those who are new to machine learning and are looking for an accessible overview of the key concepts of the subject and its practical application using R.

All participants should bring along a laptop with RStudio already installed.

The main components of the course are:

- Introduction to data analytics and machine learning.

- Overview of the R programming language.

- Principles of predictive modelling: building and evaluating models.

- Basic techniques: Decision Trees, K Nearest Neighbours, and Naive Bayes.

- Capturing linear relationships: Linear and Logistic regression.

- Unsupervised learning: clustering.

- Overview of more advanced techniques: ensemble methods (Random Forests) and Support Vector Machines.

The course will run from 9.15am to 4.45pm and lunch and refreshments are provided as part of the course.

This event is organised in collaboration with The Data Lab as part of the CPD & Training Programme.
